Deadline on judges looms in Pakistan
"We cannot reject the impression that the coalition has reached a make or break point" With a self-imposed deadline looming, Pakistani leaders had yet to clinch a deal Sunday on restoring judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf, an issue that has threatened to break up the ruling coalition. U.S.-backed Musharraf removed dozens of judges and declared emergency rule in November to halt legal challenges to his presidency. Anti-Musharraf parties won February parliamentary elections, putting together a coalition government that has promised to reinstate the judges _ a move that could increase pressure on Musharraf to resign if the courts revisit his eligibility for office. Pakistan test-fires nuclear-capable cruise missile
Pakistan said it test-fired a short-range cruise missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead Thursday, one day after archrival India test-fired a long-range missile with nuclear capability. The 220-mile-range Pakistani missile, known as the Ra'ad or Hatf VIII, was developed exclusively for launch from aircraft, a military statement said. The statement did not disclose the launch site but said the missile 'has special stealth capabilities,' and is a 'low altitude, terrain-following missile with high maneuverability.' Read more more...
